Our History
Carpet weaving runs in my blood and I strive to grow this business like a family, producing the choicest Tibetan carpets for the world. – Tsetan Gyurman Shrestha
Evolution of Samling Carpet Industry
The art of carpet weaving can be traced back to the pristine hills of Tibet where people weaved exotic designs with intricate skill. Living in abodes perched on the edge of rugged mountains at 16,000 ft, the Tibetans engaged in creating unique textile designs. In modern times, the year 1960 can be regarded as an historic year for the commercial production of Tibetan carpets in Nepal. Samling has committed itself to carry out and continue this tradition of producing quality carpets. Tsetan Gyurman, founder of Samling Carpets is one of the pioneers in terms of introducing quality Tibetan carpets from Nepal to the world, giving them a place on the international market with his outstanding work.
The Family Touch
Tsetan’s initiation into the business started off at home with proper training within the context of family wisdom itself. Subsequently, the Samling Carpet Industry (SCI) was born in 1974 with 20 trained and motivated employees. With each passing year the number of workers and the size and variety of production grew also. Samling focused on quality rather than quantity. Therefore, the Company’s reputation for quality handmade Tibetan rugs spread far beyond the factory walls attracting many buyers from abroad.
Our Beliefs
Samling believes in creating more job opportunities for competent workers who are trained for years in our establishment. Samling is an equal opportunity employer with no tolerance for child-labor. Our objectives and mission remain the same as they did more than three decades ago.
We aim to
- Build a strong and reliable network of genuine and quality loving partners all over the world.
- Promote environment-friendly and sustainable production mechanisms that can improve output as well as enhance the working environment for the employees.
- Raise the profile and reputed image of Nepalese Tibetan’s traditional, unique and high quality carpets in the international market.
- Contribute to the development of the country’s economy through employment, tax payment and other responsibilities.
- Elevate the business values of the carpet industry so that people will have a more positive image of our trade.
Our Responsibility
“The carpet industry is considered as an inferior industry for different reasons like wage exploitation, use of child labor, poor working conditions – a perception that we are determined to change! Creating abundant employment opportunities with good facilities and a healthy working environment is something to be proud of.”– -Tsetan G. Shrestha
These words describe perfectly the consistency and success that blend together and create an image of the Samling Group of Industries.
Gangchen Samling School
Samling Carpet Industries established the Gangchen Samling School in 1988 with an objective to provide education to the children of the workers and staff. To date we are running the school from nursery to class 10 for more than three hundred children. All the children are entitled to free tuition, books, uniforms and stationary supplies throughout their education. We aspire to instil the values of life and give the children an opportunity to realize their talent with our caring and education.
Free Housing and Utilities
In a country like Nepal, most manual laborers may work their entire lives and are still unable to afford their own homes. Samling has been providing free housing and utilities for its employees to reduce long commutes times to work by foot. Doing this, employees can also take better care of their children, who attend the nearby Gangchen Samling School.
Water treatment plant
Our water treatment plant purifies and recycles the dirty water discharged during the carpet washing process. This way we are able to save wastage of water and also preserve the natural underground water levels and therefore maintain a good ecological balance.
